The 14th Amendment which was ratified July 9, 1868, established equal protection of the laws, supremacy of federal citizenship and required states to follow due process of law.
In an Aug. 4th interview on Fox News 'On The Record' w/ Greta Van Susteren
Senator Lindsey Graham (transcript) R-SC talked about amending the 14th amendment to make it make sense in our time. It seems to me he is discussing a course of action likely to further improve the United States Constitution.
Whatever else they were thinking when they added the 14th Amendment, I'll bet they were not thinking about situations like we have today. Requiring birth babies to earn citizenship through their parents having fulfilled their lawful citizenship obligations is the right thing to do in these times.
The UNTHINKING KNEE-JERK reaction from the Democratic Party to the suggestion offered by Sen. Graham regarding birthright citizenship shows the Democratic leadership is mired in the miasma of stale ideas. Sen. Reid ought to follow up on this suggestion and schedule hearings on the matter. This issue should be debated and while Congress is yakking about it, we will be wondering why our elected leaders are so out of touch with the needs of the electorate.

This is the BIG bipartisan idea. Our elected leaders need to discard their damned polls, forget about a tea party takeover, forget all that other side of the aisle crap. Rise up. Be strong. Gather together in the name of our common good, and I believe, you will find agreement and cooperation amongst yourselves. Earn your ticket back to Washington DC. Get this done for us.
