Bush the Exclusionist

During his campaign, President Bush went around talking to “Bush friendly” crowds. After the election he talked to “Bush friendly” crowds about Social Security reform. Lately he has been going around speaking to “Bush friendly” crowds to build support for his Iraq war. At all these events folks were kept out unless they had a ticket. And, of course, only “Bush friendlies” got tickets. President Bush will give his State of the Union address sometime this month before a joint session of the Congress.

I cannot help expressing the wish that members of Congress who object to ‘Bush the exclusionist’ would stay home that night as a symbolic gesture of unity with all Americans who have been shut out by this president.

I wish that on that night, when Bush stands at the podium, he would see empty chairs and understand that each empty chair represented all those left behind, everyone who didn't have a ticket, every American who would have heard him out if they had been invited to his Bush friendly meetings.

I didn't get my wish, but who can blame them? An exciting night like that, I wouldn't have stayed home either. This Pittsburgh Post Gazette Editorial Ominous sign/ Bush's growing disregard for the law published Jan. 20, 2006 might cause some folks in our Congress to fret about their future.
