Bill resurrects abortion debate

"....About 170 people packed the hearing room while about 100 more listened to an audio feed in the Statehouse atrium. They descended on the House Health Committee despite the fact that Republican legislative leaders have no plans to move the issue to the House floor.
Both sides, however, wondered whether the Nov. 7 gubernatorial election could change the dynamic.
Republican Kenneth Blackwell supports a near-total ban on abortion while Democrat Ted Strickland opposes it.
The bill would outlaw virtually all abortions, making it a felony to perform one or to assist a woman in crossing state lines to receive one legally elsewhere. The one exception would be a case in which a doctor destroys a fetus during a medical procedure while trying to save the mother's life.
The bill provides no exception for cases of rape or incest or cases in which the general health of the mother is at risk...
